Sling Protectors and Softeners – An Essential Tool to Reduce Risk and Increase Safety
In the utilities industry, the efficiency and safety of setting utility poles are paramount. From navigating the challenges of diverse terrain to setting poles and stringing wire, every phase of the operation demands precision and reliability. DICA USA offers a suite of innovative support products designed specifically for Digger Derrick and Aerial Bucket Truck operations, enhancing both safety and efficiency from the job site’s arrival to departure.
Arrival and Site Access: Navigating the Terrain with DICA Site Access Mats
Synthetic slings are a wonderful tool that saves riggers and workers a significant amount of time, stress, and physical strain, as their weight is 1/7th the weight of steel. However, synthetic slings and ropes are more easily damaged by abrasion, sharp edges, chemicals, UV, and heat. Therefore, the best practice is to visually inspect synthetic slings before any shift change or changes in lifting application.
Safety Compliance:
- Both OSHA and ASME provide clear guidance on sling protection.
- OSHA 1926.251(c)(9) Slings shall be padded or protected from the sharp edges of their loads.
- ASME B30.9 Slings in contact with edges, corners, protrusions, or abrasive surfaces shall be protected with a material of sufficient strength, thickness, and construction to prevent damage”.
Weithron presented the following recommendations at a CRAC meeting (Crane Rental Association of Canada)
- Identify sharp edges on loads.
- Ensure softeners are in place to protect slings from the sharp edges
- Ensure softeners remain in place as the slings are tensioned and pressure is applied.
- Recommend raising the load 8-12 inches and inspecting the rigging.
- Ensure softeners have not moved.
- Ensure slings have not moved and are in correct contact with the softeners.
LiftGuard Solutions for Every Need
LiftGuard magnetic sling protectors provide an easy-to-use solution that clings securely to any steel load. This ensures the guard stays in place during rigging or lifting operations. No tools are needed since the magnets allow for quick and easy attachment and removal. The magnets in all LiftGuard products are slightly recessed. This slight recess ensures a magnetic connection without direct metal contact that could scratch painted surfaces.
In addition to the patented magnet system, our LiftGuard units come with heavy-duty Velcro straps. Just like the magnets ensure the guard stays in the right place, the Velcro straps ensure the slings stay in contact with the guard.
DICA’s LiftGuard products help you meet industry standards and regulations. Investing in these tools enhances operational safety and demonstrates a commitment to regulatory compliance and best practices.
- Medium & Heavy-Duty Corner Protectors: These protectors are designed for use on 90-degree corners. They eliminate sling contact with corners and hold the sling away from the load.
- Plate & Beam Protectors: Designed for use with thin edges such as I-Beams and Steel Plates. The groove design keeps the softener in place and resists moving or rolling when in use. Standard groove widths start a .25” and go up to 3” and eliminate sling contact with the edges and holds the sling away from the load.
- Steel Coil Sling Protectors: Designed specifically for use with steel coils. The center protectors have a convex shape to fit snugly inside the center bore of steel coils. They eliminate sling contact with corners and hold the sling away from the load.
