Tips for Line Worker Setup of Knuckleboom Cranes
Knuckleboom cranes have become increasingly popular and can be used in a variety of industries, including construction, tree care, railroads, mining, and maritime. According to Crane Hot Line, knuckleboom cranes can be used in a variety of applications because they are light weight, compact, offer high lifting capacities, and can typically be loaded out by a single person. Learn how to safely set them up with these helpful tips for construction and line workers.
When using equipment with outriggers, it is important to understand the load requirements and pressure it will exert on the ground. Most knucklebooms have small outrigger floats which lead to higher ground bearing pressures. Higher ground bearing pressures increase the chance of excessive deflection, ground punch through and outrigger pad failure.
DICA’s SafetyTech Outrigger pads are made from engineered thermoplastic which is non-porous and impervious to rot and decay. Because of these properties, SafetyTech pads will not absorb water or any chemicals, and will not splinter, rot or decay and will not break under stress when used within the stated guidelines.
Because knuckleboom cranes can often be set up and operated by one person, it is important that one person is able to lift and carry the necessary equipment and attachments that come with it. During setup, risks might include exerting excessive force, working in awkward postures, or exposing hands to being pinched or caught between items.
DICA designs its products with helpful ergonomic features, to minimize both the weight of its products, and the amount of lifting necessary when using them. The round design of SafetyTech Outrigger Pads and recessed TuffGrip handles allows the pads to be easily be lifted, slid, or rolled into place. These features give the operator the option of not carrying the pad at all.
