A crane recently overturned as it was operated on wintery ground conditions in New Hampshire. It’s provides a good reminder that one of the most important aspects to a safe setup with any outrigger pad is learning to safely and effectively use them.

A factor that may have contributed to this particular accident was the presence of snow and ice under the outriggers. It’s critically important that operators always remove all snow and ice from the location where outrigger pads will be set. Pressure creates friction which causes heat. A ground condition that may not look slick when setting up can become very slick when the outrigger foot is engaged on the outrigger pad.
