Crane Accident Provides Reminder for Safe Setup of Outrigger Pads in Winter

A crane recently overturned as it was operated on wintery ground conditions in New Hampshire. It’s provides a good reminder that one of the most important aspects to a safe setup with any outrigger pad is learning to safely and effectively use them.

A factor that may have contributed to this particular accident was the presence of snow and ice under the outriggers. It’s critically important that operators always remove all snow and ice from the location where outrigger pads will be set. Pressure creates friction which causes heat. A ground condition that may not look slick when setting up can become very slick when the outrigger foot is engaged on the outrigger pad.

Lack of Outrigger Pads Results in Serious Crane Incident

Vertikal.net reports of a recent crane rollover in Oslo, Norway. The cause of the accident was a failure to use proper outrigger pads. This resulted in a point loaded setup (failing to spread a concentrated load over a wide enough area) and lead to the outrigger foot punching through the paved surface and the toppling of the crane.

Panora, IA – November 9, 2011 – DICA introduces the TuffGrip Handle System, a new safety feature available on the company’s line of Safety Tech Outrigger Pads.Constructed of an extremely tough thermoplastic, the TuffGrip Handle System is Guaranteed for Life and is the toughest and safest handle DICA has ever offered.

In addition to toughness, the new handle system is designed to improve ergonomic safety. It does so by providing a lifting point that does not exceed 50 lbs. per person and has a handle length that encourages operators to use proper lifting technique.

For improved jobsite safety, the TuffGrip Handle System’s reduced length design and high visibility safety orange color helps eliminate trip hazards. TuffGrip Handles are also resistant to UV, chemicals, hydraulic fluid and water, ensuring their lifetime durability.Handle diameters are 0.5” thick for all 1” and 1.5” thick pads, while 2” thick outrigger pads have a 5/8” thick handle.
